Located at the center of the campus of Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia, this new building adds 82,000 square foot of administration, office and student services spaces on 4 levels. Centered on the great lawn, the dramatic entry is anticipated to form the backdrop for future graduations and other events. The building provides visual continuity with the Neo-Georgian appearance of much of the rest of the campus with brick veneer and architectural precast concrete, including solid 2 story tall concrete columns at the main entrances. The steel framed dome structure on the roof makes this the tallest building on campus and a standout as a campus landmark. The structure is steel framed with composite floors and a steel framed roof. In order to increase the natural bearing capacity of the foundations and reduce the project costs, a program of soil improvement was implemented.
