Mary Brock Forbes Hall, Christopher Newport University, Newport News, VA

Located on the campus of Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia, this new building adds 160,000 square feet of laboratories, classrooms, a vivarium, and office space for different disciplines.  Built in 2 phases, the building provides visual continuity with the Neo-Georgian appearance of much of the rest of the campus with brick veneer and architectural precast concrete, including 3 story tall solid concrete columns at the main entrance, and steel framed mansard roofs to hide ductwork and mechanical equipment.  The structure consists of 3 stories of composite floor framing in the first phase and one elevated level of composite framing with a bar joist roof in the second phase.  In order to increase the natural bearing capacity of the foundations and reduce the project costs, a program of dynamic compaction was implemented.
