Located on the campus of Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia, this new building adds 135,000 square feet of laboratories, classrooms, and office space for different disciplines on 3 levels. The building provides visual continuity with the Neo-Georgian appearance of much of the rest of the campus with brick veneer and architectural precast concrete, including 3 story tall solid concrete columns at the main entrance, and steel framed mansard roofs to hide ductwork and mechanical equipment. A steel framed dome structure on the roof makes this building stand out as a campus landmark. The structure consists of 3 stories of composite floor framing and a full attic for mechanical services. Strict vibration requirements in portions of several floors required. In order to increase the bearing capacity of the natural foundations and reduce the project costs, a program of dynamic compaction was implemented.
