Freeman Center Addition, Christopher Newport University, Newport News, VA

Located on the campus of Christopher Newport University in Newport News, Virginia, this one and 2 story, 63,000 square foot structure adds a much needed gym, exercise, health care services, and small theater space to the existing Freeman Center.  The addition wraps the original building on 3 sides and provides visual continuity with the Neo-Georgian appearance of much of the rest of the campus with brick veneer and architectural precast concrete, including 2 story tall solid precast columns at the entries, and steel and cold formed mansard roofs around the perimeter. The structure consists of steel bar joists for the roof and composite steel framing for the floors supported by steel frames typically and by load bearing masonry at the new gym. The new construction is separated structurally from the original building by expansion joints and the new construction is further divided into independent structures by expansion joints and fire walls.
