Structural design of 2 new theaters (a 1,700 seat performance hall and a 440 seat theater) and the rehabilitation of 74,000 sf of existing high school into a 200 seat theater, and state of the art classroom spaces, offices and support spaces for the new theaters. The project included a wide range of techniques and materials include structural and architectural precast concrete, reinforced load bearing masonry (lightweight and normal weight), cast in place concrete walls, grade beams and structural slabs, structural steel columns and beams, composite floor slabs, prefabricated columns and architecturally exposed custom steel trusses and columns. Challenges included construction in 2 phases while keeping the other areas in service, acoustical issues from local traffic and the nearby Langley Air Force Base, large cantilevers to improve sight lines, and the “tower of light” exterior stair.
